Honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. Dana Garcia

A Life of Scientific Rigor, Service, and Mentorship
The spectroscopy community remembers Dr. Dana Garcia with deep respect and gratitude. Dana passed away on April 6, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by exceptional scientific rigor, dedicated service, and meaningful mentorship that shaped colleagues across industry and professional societies. On a personal level, Dana had a deep and enduring love for animals who brought her endless joy and comfort throughout her life. She believed every animal deserved safety, kindness, and a loving home (filled with treats!), and she found so much happiness in giving the many rescued dogs of the Garcia Buhks family a life of spoiled comfort.
Scientific Career and Contributions
Over a career spanning more than four decades, Dr. Dana Garcia was a leader in FT‑IR, NIR, and Raman spectroscopy, with significant contributions to rheology‑FT‑IR, at‑line and plant‑based methods, and spectroscopic approaches for quality control and customer support. Her work exemplified applied spectroscopy grounded in deep chemical insight, rigorous problem‑solving, and was recognized through numerous publications, patents, honors, and awards.
Dana spent most of her career at Arkema, retiring as Principal Scientist after more than 30 years, where she led the Vibrational Spectroscopy Laboratory and advanced spectroscopic capabilities across research and manufacturing. Earlier, she held positions at BF Goodrich and DuPont, served as an Industrial Fellow at NASA Lewis Research Center, and remained professionally active as a contractor through 2024. She earned her PhD in Chemistry from Brandeis University, following undergraduate studies at Stockton University.
Service to the Scientific Community
For the past several years, Dana led the Society of Applied Spectroscopy Gold Medal Award program. Dr. Garcia, was deeply committed to professional service and leadership within the scientific community. She held numerous leadership roles within the American Chemical Society, the Society of Applied Spectroscopy (NY/NJ Section), and the Eastern Analytical Symposium, including service as Chair‑Elect of the SAS NY/NJ Section, an EAS board member, a symposium organizer, and an editor for Polymer Preprints. Through these contributions, she helped shape scientific programming and foster enduring connections between industry and academia.

“I worked with Dana for many years and particularly appreciated the collaborations we had on different projects. Dana was very knowledgeable about spectroscopy and, as importantly, was aware of several technique advantages and limitations, always leading to interesting discussions where you could feel her integrity, scientific knowledge, and honesty. Dana was someone easy to talk to and caring about people. She was also very organized, her lab area always being recognized for its appearance and organization, which you could also see through her technical communications.” (Pierre Ricou).
Reflection from a Mentee
“I first met Dana twenty years ago, when I was an intern in the rheology lab at Arkema. At the time, Dana was collaborating with Yuri Gogotsi at Drexel on a project involving near-field Raman imaging. My husband today was a postdoc then, and he worked with Dana on that project. Life is full of wonderful coincidences.
Many years later, I returned to Arkema as a researcher, and Dana welcomed me into her inner circle of trusted colleagues. I cherish fond memories of her scientific enthusiasm—particularly when she explored the integration of online spectroscopy with rheology. Yet even more precious are my memories of Dana as a woman: strong, resolute, rigorous, and professional—a true scientific pioneer, always striving toward higher horizons” (Sara Reynaud).

“As an early-career industrial scientist, working with Dr. Dana Garcia at Arkema showed me that effective mentorship is both demanding and generous. Her insistence on rigor, clarity, and attention to detail continues to shape how I approach scientific work.
Dana taught by asking the right questions, guiding deeper thinking about spectroscopy, structure-property relationships, and real‑world industrial challenges. Her high standards reflected genuine care for science, the customer, and the people doing the work. Reflection from a Colleague and Friend
A great spectroscopist in the field of polymer characterization. Dana was a longtime member and officer of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy (SAS). We worked closely together coordinating the SAS Gold Medal Award program. She jumped right in when I asked her to help. I enjoyed our discussions and collaborations as we planned and co-chaired this session each year at the Eastern Analytical Symposium. She was always available to support the local scientific organizations (EAS & SAS), and I all looked forward to seeing my friend at events. I will dearly miss her presence in my life (Deborah Peru).

2025 Gold Medal Award Winner - Dr. Geraldine Richmond

This year, the NY/NJ Section of SAS is pleased to announce that the 2025 Gold Medal recipient is Dr. Geraldine Richmond, University of Oregon, http://richmondscience.uoregon.edu
Geraldine L. Richmond currently serves as the Presidential Chair in Science and Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oregon. Bridging the fields of chemistry and physics, Richmond’s research focuses on understanding the molecular characteristics of water surfaces, studies relevant to environmental issues such as oil remediation, atmospheric chemistry, and alternative energy sources. Her teaching and extensive outreach efforts have focused on science communication and building a strong, inclusive workforce. She is the Founding Director of COACh, a grass-roots organization that has helped over 25,000 women scientists and engineers in career advancement in the U.S. and over two dozen developing countries.
Richmond has received numerous honors and awards for her research and outreach efforts, including the National Medal of Science from President Obama (2016), the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring from President Clinton (1997), and the Presidential Young Investigator Award from President Reagan (1985). She has also given over 100 distinguished lectureships and addresses since 2000.
